What does U=U mean?
U=U means undetectable equals untransmittable — a person with an undetectable HIV viral load cannot transmit HIV sexually.
Also: undetectable equals untransmittable, U equals U
U=U stands for undetectable equals untransmittable. It reflects strong scientific consensus: a person living with HIV who is on effective treatment and has a sustained undetectable viral load cannot pass HIV to partners through sex.
This is one of the most important sexual health messages in decades. It means people on successful treatment can have sex without transmitting HIV, and it powerfully counters stigma around living with HIV.
Reaching and keeping an undetectable status relies on consistent treatment and regular medical care. U=U applies specifically to sexual transmission when viral load is durably undetectable.
