Bear refers to a body type and an aesthetic — typically bigger, hairier, and more rugged — but it is really a community and culture built around comfort in one's own skin. The bear movement grew as a proud alternative to narrow beauty standards.
The bear world has its own vocabulary of related tribes: cubs (younger or smaller bears), otters (leaner and hairy), wolves, and chubs, among others. These are affectionate descriptors rather than strict categories.
Bear spaces are known for being friendly and body-positive. Identifying as a bear is about belonging and self-acceptance as much as looks.
